Northern Uganda: Current Situation

The Government of Uganda has been engaged for a long time in peace talks with the LRA. During much of this time, the north has been relatively peaceful with a marked increase in security away from the IDP camps in the villages. This has meant that some of the population living in the camps have started to move back into the villages, encouraged by the Ugandan government to do so.

In this return to the villages and towns, there is a great need for training and education, as for so many, their existence hes been based around IDP camp life. As a result, Heart of Compassion Trust is involved with two projects at present, seeking to educate and support people in such situations.

One project involves the training of young people in farming, specifically how to use Oxen to plough land and take the proceeds to market, whilst the other project involves training groups of people in the north in I.T. skills relevant for employment in the larger towns. The training project, run by Oasis Uganda, is called Net2Work. There are currently three such projects running in Uganda, with Heart of Compassion Trust supporting the project in the town of Pader.

For more information on either of these projects, visit the Current Projects page.
